Using Auto-Assemble in Narrafix

Beta: Auto-Assemble is currently in beta testing and not yet available to all users. To get access, write to us at info@narrafix.audio.

In audio dramas and duet audiobooks, every narrator usually records their part separately. Before editing can start, someone has to cut these recordings together line by line. Auto-Assemble does this for you.

Narrafix recognizes who is speaking, places every line where it belongs in your PDF script and creates one file per chapter, or a single file for the whole project. You then proof and fine-tune the result in Narrafix Studio and download an AAF/RPP session to finish the production in your DAW, with one track per narrator.

Workflow

🎙️ Step 1: Upload the recordings of each narrator

Create a new project and upload the recordings of all narrators together with your PDF script. You do not need to cut or sort anything beforehand: upload the files just as they come from the studio.

  • Every recording belongs to exactly one chapter. If a narrator recorded several chapters in one go, split the file by chapter first.
  • Tip: Put the chapter in the file name (e.g. Chapter_03_Anna.wav  ). Narrafix uses the file names to suggest the right chapter for each recording.

🧩 Step 2: Activate Auto-Assemble

Under Choose modules, tick Auto-Assemble. The Auto-Assemble dialog opens right away.

Under Settings in the dialog, you can adjust the Pause at speaker change: the pause inserted whenever one narrator hands over to the next (default: 2.3 seconds).

👉 You can reopen the dialog at any time using the gear icon next to Auto-Assemble.

📚 Step 3: Choose one file or several chapters

Under Assignment, choose how your recordings should be assembled:

  • Audio drama – Assemble everything into one file: All recordings are merged into a single file. Nothing else to do here.
  • Duet reading – Assemble into several chapters: Each chapter becomes its own file. The dialog now lists your recordings, each with a Chapter field.

For duet readings, Narrafix suggests a chapter for every recording. Please check each suggestion and correct it where needed. All recordings with the same chapter name are assembled into one chapter file.

We strongly recommend booking Auto-Proof together with Auto-Assemble. Auto-Proof checks the assembled audio against your script and sets a proofing marker wherever the two differ. This is the fastest way to spot missing lines, slips or passages that ended up in the wrong place.

You can combine Auto-Assemble with further modules:

  • Voice Tags (requires Auto-Proof) groups the markers by narrator, so each narrator gets their own pickup package.
  • Auto-Cut removes retakes and repetitions from the assembled chapters. Without Auto-Cut, Narrafix only assembles, and all takes stay in the file.

🔎 Step 5: Proof-listen and Edit in Narrafix Studio

Once processing is finished, your file list shows the assembled chapters in reading order, e.g. 000_Intro.wav  , 001_Chapter_01.wav  . In audio drama mode you get a single file, 000_Assembled.wav  .

  • Hover over the info icon in front of a chapter to see which recordings it was assembled from.
  • A grey Review badge means there is something worth a look. Hover over it to see the hints, e.g. passages that could not be matched to the script.
  • To change the order, drag a chapter by its handle on the left. To rename it, simply click its name.

Then open each chapter in Narrafix Studio and listen through it with the proofing markers. Here you can fine-tune cuts, check the voice tags and share pickup lists with your narrators.

👉 Tip: Give the voices their real names in the Studio. These names become the track names in your AAF/RPP session.

↔️ Step 6: Download AAF / RPP and finish in your DAW

When proofing is done, download your project as AAF (for Pro Tools) or RPP (for REAPER). You get one session file per chapter and one for the whole project, with all audio files included.

The session is laid out the way the text is read:

  • One track per narrator across the whole session, named as in the Studio
  • A marker at the start of every chapter
  • Passages that could not be matched to the script at the end of their chapter, so you can place them by hand

Now do the final mix and edit in the DAW of your choice, and your project is ready for delivery.

👉 In short: Upload → Auto-Assemble → Auto-Proof → Proof in the Studio → Finish in the DAW.

❓ FAQ

Audio drama or duet reading: which mode should I choose?

Choose Audio drama if everything should end up in one continuous file. Choose Duet reading for books and any project you want to deliver chapter by chapter. A single WAV file can be at most 2 GB; if your recordings are longer, Narrafix asks you to assemble them into several chapters.

How does Narrafix know which chapter a recording belongs to?

Narrafix suggests a chapter based on the file name and duration. This is only a suggestion, so please check every assignment before you continue.

Does Narrafix recognize the narrators automatically?

Yes. Voices are recognized automatically, just like with Voice Tags. If a voice was not recognized, you will see a hint on the chapter; check the voice tags in the Studio.

What happens to passages that cannot be matched to the script?

Nothing gets lost. Every part of every recording ends up either in the chapter file or in an extra file named …_unplaceable.wav  . Hover over the chapter's Review badge to download it. In the AAF/RPP session, these passages sit at the end of their chapter.

Does Auto-Assemble remove retakes and repetitions?

Only if you also book Auto-Cut. Auto-Cut works on the assembled chapters, and every cut can be undone in the Studio.

Can I add recordings later?

Yes, as additional files. Assign them to a new chapter: a chapter that has already been assembled cannot take new recordings. To redo a chapter, delete it and upload its recordings again. Deleting a chapter also deletes the recordings it was assembled from.

Can I still open or download the individual recordings?

No. After assembly, you work with the chapter files only. The info icon in front of each chapter shows which recordings it contains.

What will people see when I share my project?

Share links only show the finished chapter files, never the individual recordings or the unmatched passages.

Why can't I select Auto-Assemble in my project?

In some older projects that already contain audio files, Auto-Assemble is not available. Create a new project and upload your recordings there.
