In which cases might Auto-Proofing struggle?
Auto-Proofing speeds up your review process by marking potential misreads and inconsistencies automatically. Still, there are a few edge cases where it may struggle to interpret the content correctly — especially when text formatting or special characters get in the way.
| Case | Description | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Footnotes not represented correctly | Footnote references (e.g., “¹”) may appear as a missing “1” marker. The actual footnote insertion might not be displayed properly or may itself be flagged as missing. | Manually verify all footnote references; ignore false “missing” markers. |
| Drop Cap / Initial Caps not recognized properly | Reading error is detected on the first word, because in scripted text the first letter is cropped. A missing marker appears shortly after with the previously missing letter. | Remove both markers — they’re irrelevant and don’t affect the actual read. |
| Chapter heading like “1” or “I” mislinked when read aloud as e.g. "Chapter 1" | When the narrator says “Chapter 1” but the script only shows “1” or “I”, irrelevant proofing markers appear. The word “chapter” is incorrectly struck through and linked to the previous word as a misread. | Ignore these markers; they don’t indicate real misreads. |
